Half Hours with the Hindus (1859) by John J. Pool is a collection of essays that offers an overview of Hindu religious practices, customs, and philosophy. Written during British colonial rule in India, the book reflects Pool's curiosity and fascination with Hinduism. He explores various aspects of Hindu society, including rituals, festivals, and temple practices, while attempting to provide a balanced view of Hindu culture. Although the book was intended to inform and educate Western readers, it also reflects the biases of its time, often presenting Hindu practices through a colonial lens. It remains an important historical document on 19th-century perceptions of India.

John Pool (1826–1884), a North Carolina lawyer and politician, was instrumental in the development of the state's Republican Party during and after the Civil War. Initially a Whig, he opposed secession and supported the Union and Reconstruction. Pool became North Carolina's first Republican U.S. Senator, where he advocated for moderate Reconstruction policies and worked alongside Governor William Woods Holden to combat Ku Klux Klan violence. After leaving the Senate in 1873, he continued his legal career in Washington, D.C. Pool passed away in 1884, leaving behind a lasting legacy of public service, with his family also active in politics.
