This Hand-Book of Surgical Operations has been prepared at the suggestion of several professional friends, who early entered the medical staff of the Volunteer Army. It was alleged that the military surgeon of this country had no small and convenient work satiable for a pocket companion, containing the details of common as well as the important operations in surgery. He must either encumber himself with the large treatises on general and operative surgery, or rely upon his memory in the emergencies of the service. In its scope the work is limited to those branches of operative surgery which are of the most important to the military surgeon. This was deemed advisable, in order to render the volumes convenient and portable as possible. Within these limits the constant effort has been to embrace the greatest number of subjects, to arrange them in the best form for reference, and to give the largest amount of practical details, anatomical and operaAs the value of such a work is much enhanced by engravngs, care has been taken to illustrate every subject to the fullest extent. For this purpose works on operative surgery have been largely consulted, and such illustrations selected as were deemed most valuable.

Stephen Smith (1823 – Aug1922) was an American surgeon and a pioneer in public health. He was born on February 19, 1823 in Skaneateles, New York. His father was a cavalry officer in the American Revolutionary War. Smith was an active proponent of the Metropolitan Health Bill. He led the establishment of the Metropolitan Board of Health in New York City in 1866, the first such public health agency in the United States. In 1875, he was elected as a member to the American Philosophical Society. He later founded the American Public Health Association. He died on August 27, 1922. He has published "Monograph of Seventy-five Cases of Rupture of the Urinary Bladder," which was highly commended in this country and abroad (1851), "Hand-Book of Surgical Operations" (1863), and " Principles of Operative Surgery" (1879).
