In happily ever after, a woman, on 'her fifth drink, or maybe the sixth', struggles to make sense of her marriage - the reasons to stay and to flee tugging at her with equal force.

What follows is one of the most compelling dissections yet into the heart of a relationship - a relationship that has known rage and violence, repugnance and despair, but also one that has borne witness to tenderness and intimacy and promise.

In Kamal Trilok Singh's debut, nothing is as it appears - love is a gloved fist; marriage is, at once, a stone and a bird; and conversations are labyrinths, multicursal, with dead ends and a single exit. One enters blindfolded.

Kamal Trilok Singh is a writer. happily ever after is his debut novel.
