Die vorliegende Biographie gibt Aus- kunft �ber Einfl�sse von Erziehung, Bildung und Umwelt auf die Entwicklung zum Naturforscher, �ber Quellen von Erfolgen und Mi erfolgen, Motive bei der Auswahl von Forschungsgegen- st�nden, die Wirkung von Forschungserkenntnissen und -ergebnis- sen sowie physikalischer und philosophischer Ideen in Wissen- schaft, Technik und Gesellschaft. Zum Naturforscher entwickelte sich Heinrich Hertz im Rahmen einer gl�ckhaften Synthese von Anlage und �u eren Bedingungen. Er verdankt alles nicht nur seinem Flei , seinem Pflichteifer und seiner Begabung, sondern auch der F�rderung, die er erfahren hat. Vor allem die Begegnung mit Hermann von Helmholtz und dessen Denkstil waren es, die den wissenschaftlichen Werdegang von Heinrich Hertz zur Forscherpers�nlichkeit internationalen Rufs gepr�gt haben. Hermann von Helmholtz, einer der bedeu- tendsten Gelehrten des 19. Jahrhunderts, erwarb sich Verdienste als Mediziner und Physiologe, Physiker und Mathematiker, trat aber auch als Philosoph hervor. Er war ein hervorragender Hoch- schullehrer und regte 1879 seinen Sch�ler Heinrich Hertz an, die Faraday-Maxwellsche Theorie der Elektrodynamik einer experi- mentellen Pr�fung zu unterziehen. Diese Aufgabe konnte Hertz nach jahrelange. intensiver Vorbereitung schlie lich 1886/89 l�sen, er erzielte dabei bedeutende Ergebnisse und ging als ein "Kopf ersten Ranges" in die Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften ein. Er hatte wesentlichen Anteil an der Vollendung der klassi- sehen Physik und gab Antworten auf grundlegende physikalische Fragestellungen, die den Aufbruch zur modernen Physikbeschleu- nigten.
