Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) z�hlt - neben Friedrich H�lderlin, Georg B�chner und anderen - zu den bevorzugten Projektionsfiguren der Avantgarden der literarischen Moderne im deutschsprachigen Kulturraum. Sein im Freitod am Wannsee scheinbar kulminierendes berufliches und pers�nliches Scheitern galt der jungen Dichtergeneration um die Jahrhundertwende als exemplarisch und symptomatisch zugleich f�r die vorherrschenden, generell als kunstfeindlich aufgefa ten gesellschaftlichen Zust�nde. Im Bestreben, solche vermeintlich verfemten, vom "gro en" Publikum verkannten Dichter als die Ahnherrn und Wegweiser der eigenen literarhistorischen Epoche zu verstehen, kommt es seit etwa 1880 zu einer besonders intensiven Wertsch�tzung des Dichters, die sich in zahllosen Hommage-Texten ebenso �u erte wie in den Versuchen, bis dahin geringer geachtete Werke (wie z. B. Penthesilea) zu popularisieren oder institutionalisierte Formen des Dichtergedenkens zu erneuern. Unternommen wird hier also der Versuch, die Stationen dieses Kanonisierungsprozesses mittels umfangreicher Quellenstudien zu rekonstruieren; dies geschieht nicht zuletzt auch, um die Voraussetzungen literarischen Wertewandels im historischen Kontext und im Hinblick auf ihre �bertragbarkeit einer genaueren Pr�fung zu unterziehen.
