Os helmintos intestinais representam uma das formas mais prevalentes de doen�a parasit�ria que reside no trato gastrointestinal humano. S�o pat�genos multicelulares que infectam um grande n�mero de hospedeiros humanos e animais, causando doen�as cr�nicas generalizadas e morbidade. Os principais afetados s�o pessoas pobres em pa�ses em desenvolvimento, especialmente crian�as e mulheres gr�vidas. Foi realizado um inqu�rito sobre parasitas helmintos intestinais entre alunos do ensino b�sico em duas escolas prim�rias de uma comunidade rural na Nig�ria. Ap�s uma an�lise cuidadosa, verificou-se que as mulheres estavam mais infetadas do que os homens. No entanto, o estudo indicou que a helmint�ase intestinal n�o era relativamente prevalente na �rea estudada. Na Nig�ria, foram realizados v�rios estudos para estimar a situa��o das infec��es por helmintos transmitidos pelo solo, mas h� poucos relat�rios sobre helmint�ase intestinal entre crian�as em idade escolar em Ekpoma, no estado de Edo, na Nig�ria. Portanto, este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a ocorr�ncia e a intensidade das infec��es por helmintos intestinais entre as crian�as em idade escolar na �rea de estudo, a fim de servir como um guia para os planejadores de sa�de do estado e de outras regi�es na avalia��o de programas de controle de vermes entre crian�as em idade escolar.
