Henry II's reign is best known for his dramatic conflicts with his own wife and sons and with Thomas Becket. It was also, however, a crucial period in the evolution of legal and governmental institutions.It is now over thirty years since the appearance of W. L. Warren's monumental study, and in this volume a group of experts provide reevaluations of various important aspects of the reign. Topics include Henry's accession and his relations with the papacy, the French king, other rulers in the British Isles and the Norman baronage; the development of the common law and the coinage; the court and its literary milieu; the use of Arthurian legend for political purposes; and the career of the Young King Henry; an introduction examines the historiography of the reign.

Harper-Bill, Christopher: - Christopher Harper-Bill is Professor of Medieval History at the University of East Anglia.

Power, Daniel: - Daniel Power is Professor of Medieval History at Swansea University. He is the author of a number of works concerning France and the British Isles in the Central Middle Ages, including The Norman Frontier in the Twelfth and Early Thirteenth Centuries (2004). He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (of London) and of the Royal Historical Society.
