Hermann Weyls Raum - Zeit - Materie geh�rt zu den herausragendsten und gleichzeitig ungew�hnlichsten Texten der gesamten physikalisch-mathematischen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts. Entstanden ist Raum - Zeit - Materie aus Vorlesungen, die der Autor im Sommersemester 1917 an der Eidgen�ssisch-Technischen-Hochschule in Z�rich hielt. Es war das erste systematische Lehrbuch der gerade erst durch Albert Einstein ersonnenen Allgemeinen Relativit�tstheorie, entwickelte sich aber rasch innerhalb der 5 Jahre zwischen 1918 und 1923 zu einem Klassiker, der die Zeiten �berdauern sollte. Auch nach 100 Jahren setzt die Weylsche Darstellung eines der anspruchsvollsten Gebiete der Physik einen Ma stab an Verst�ndlichkeit ohne Aufgabe der Strenge, der seither nur selten wieder erreicht wurde.
Damit richtet sich das Buch auch heute noch an alle, die ein tieferes Verst�ndnis der Allgemeinen Relativit�tstheorie anstreben und insbesondere nachvollziehen wollen aus welchen physikalischen Fragestellungen heraus sich diese bis heute so bew�hrte wie bewunderte Theorie entwickelt hat, auf welchen Grundprinzipien sie beruht und insbesondere, wie es zu den mathematischen Begriffsbildungen kam, derer sie sich bedient.
In dieser neuen Ausgabe wird der Originaltext der 5. Auflage von 1923 mit manchen Erg�nzungen aus vorherigen Auflagen abgedruckt. Ausf�hrliche Kommentare der Herausgeber erl�utern die historischen, mathematischen und physikalischen Hintergr�nde und ordnen den Weylschen Text in die heutige Forschungslandschaft ein.

Hermann Weyl (1885-1955) war ein herausragender Mathematiker der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ausgebildet im Göttingen Hilberts und Kleins prägten seine Arbeiten weite Teile der Mathematik, von den Grundlagen bis zu den Anwendungen. Die Einbettung naturwissenschaftlichen Denkens in eine umfassendere philosophische Perspektive geben seinen Arbeiten häufig eine eigene, für das 20. Jahrhundert eher unübliche und unverwechselbare Note.

Domenico Giulini ist theoretischer Physiker an der Leibniz Universität Hannover. Er hat 1990 an der Universität Cambridge über ein mathematisches Thema aus der Allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie promoviert und ist - mit einigen Abschweifungen - bis heute in diesem Gebiet als Forscher und Lehrer tätig. Seine Wahl dieser Fachrichtung geht zurück auf eine frühe Lektüre von Raum Zeit Materie. Darüber hinaus interessiert er sich lebhaft für die Geschichte seines Fachs.
Erhard Scholz ist Mathematikhistoriker (im Ruhestand) an der Universität Wuppertal. Im Jahre 1980 hat er in Bonn mit einer Arbeit über die Geschichte des Mannigfaltigkeitsbegriffs promoviert. Sein Arbeitsschwerpunkt ist die Geschichte der Mathematik im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert und ihre Beziehungen zur Physik sowie die Kristallographie (im frühen 19. Jahrhundert).
