José M. Martínez fue iniciado en el ministerio cristiano por Samuel Vila. En 1943, el fundador de lo que después se convertiría en la Editorial CLIE lo nombró líder en la iglesia bautista que él pastoreaba en Terrassa. En 1948, Martínez fue invitado a pastorear una iglesia bautista en Barcelona, posición que ocupó durante 30 fructíferos años. Renunció al pastorado en 1979 por razones de salud y se dedicó a escribir, enseñar y trabajar con diversas organizaciones de ministerios evangélicos. Ha sido el editor de varias revistas cristianas y ha ocupado el puesto de Presidente de la Alianza Evangélica Española, entre otros grupos evangélicos. Habla español, inglés, francés y alemán. Su libro «Hermenéutica Bíblica» es su obra principal. Está casado con Julia Vila, con quien tiene tres hijos.
