Es soll untersucht werden, wie stimmig Gumbrechts Analysen sind und ob deren normative Schlussfolgerung gerechtfertigt ist. Es wird sich zeigen, dass Gumbrecht sowohl bei seinen Dekonstruktionen als auch bei seiner Konklusion schwerwiegende Fehler begeht. Dies hat unter anderem mit falschen Begriffsverständnissen und inkorrekten Interpretationen zu tun. Gumbrechts Vorhaben in dessen Buch Präsenz (2016) besteht darin, die Bedeutung der Historie und die mit ihr einhergehende hermeneutische Praxis zu entkräften, oder zumindest in Frage zu stellen. Bisher hat die Historie als wissenschaftliche Institution die Zeit in ein instrumentales Paradigma verwandelt und hat durch das Forschen und die Berichterstattung über geschichtliche Ereignisse dazu beigetragen, der Gemeinschaft eine Identität zu geben (Gumbrecht, 2016: 9). Durch das Aufkommen diverser philosophischer Strömungen, wie jener des Poststrukturalismus in der zweiten Hälfte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, wurde dieses historische Paradigma jedoch in Frage gestellt. Gumbrecht spannt diesen Gedanken nun weiter und fragt sich, wo die Grenzen der Historie, der Geisteswissenschaft und ihrer hermeneutischen Methode in der heutigen Zeit liegen (Gumbrecht, 2016: 10). Er behauptet, dass sich unsere Gesellschaft aus dem historischen Verständnis heraus bewegt hat. Dies hat mit der zunehmenden Komplexität von Raum- und Zeitkonzepten zu tun, welche sich durch die Globalisierung und den zunehmenden Fluss von Informationen, Technologien, etc. verdeutlicht.
