Die Anwendung erfolgt an einem Auszug aus Sartres "Der Existentialismus ist ein Humanismus" (Schulbuchtext), der im Anhang zu finden ist. Bei der Reflexion wird die Hermeneutik als Unterrichtsmethode auf ihre Tauglichkeit geprüft. Oft werden Geisteswissenschaften, wie z.B. Philosophie oder Geschichte, den Naturwissenschaften direkt gegenübergestellt. Vereinfacht kann man sagen, dass es in den Geisteswissenschaften um das Verstehen (eines Sinnes oder einer Bedeutung) und in den Naturwissenschaften um das Erklären (einer Ursache oder eines Grundes) geht. Alle Geisteswissenschaften haben die Gemeinsamkeit, dass sie sich für das Erleben und die Geschichte des Menschen interessieren. Diese Aspekte lassen sich allerdings nur von innen her verstehen und eben nicht von au en her erklären. Der Name Geisteswissenschaften kommt daher, dass sich diese Wissenschaften mit dem Menschen beschäftigen, wobei der Geist im Allgemeinen als das spezifisch Menschliche gilt.
