Auch fUr den praktizierenden Arzt, an die sich die kurzgefaBte Monographie mei- nes langjaIuigen Mitarbeiters Prof. Dr. G. Bodem, mit dem mich intensive experimentelle Bemiihungen urn die Fundierung der Digi- talistherapie besonders verbinden, wendet, ist die Herzinsuffizienz in ihren verschiedenen Formen und Ursachen ein wichtiges Krankheits- bild, da in der Regel ihm die meist langfristige Behandlung dieses Zustandes obliegt. Dabei sehe ich das Besondere dieser Darstellung der Herzinsuffi- zienz darin, daB der Autor es versucht hat, die klinischen, pathophy- siologischen und therapeutischen Aspekte dieses Krankheitszustan- des gleichgewichtig abzuhandeln und aus einander zu entwickeln. Daraus resultiert eine Geschlossenheit der Darstellung, die insbeson- dere den therapeutischen Dberlegungen zugute kommt. Gleichzeitig erkennt man, wie sehr die physiologische und biochemi- sche Grundlagenforschung von der Untersuchung pathologischer Verhiiltnisse profitierte und wieweit auch die Bemiihungen zur Auf- kliirung des Wirkungsmechanismus der Digitalisglykoside und ver- wandter Substanzen wesentliche Beitriige zur Physiologie lieferten. Derartige Gedanken erscheinen gerade heute wichtig, in einer Zeit, in der laute Stimmen einer pragmatischen Fundierung der Medizin das Wort reden. Sie seien hier nur in Parenthese geiiuBert, da zwei- fellos die Absicht der hier vorgelegten Monographie eine praktische ist, niimlich die Erkennung und Behandlung herzinsuffizienter Pa- tienten zu f6rdem und dies auf einem didaktisch geschickt dargebo- tenen theoretischen Hintergrund. In diesem Sinne wiinsche ich der Schrift eine weite Verbreitung.
