Demi duimt de hele dag. Er is maar weinig wat ze zo fijn vindt! Haar duim denkt daar heel anders over. Hij vindt het maar niks in Demi's mond. Net als de tong en de tanden wil hij dat Demi meteen stopt met duimen. In dit boek krijg je een kijkje in de mond van Demi. Je ziet wat er gebeurt met de duim, de tanden en de tong én je ziet wat er gebeurt wanneer het duimen eindelijk stopt. Door mijn werk als logopedist kom ik veel in aanraking met kinderen die, als gevolg van het duimen (of het gebruik van een speen), een scheefstand van de tanden hebben en een verkeerde manier van slikken en spreken (slissen). Duimen en het gebruik van een speen vallen onder de noemer 'afwijkende mondgewoonten', net zoals bijvoorbeeld nagelbijten. Voor dit probleem is de methode OMFT ontwikkeld. OMFT staat voor oro-myofunctionele therapie en wordt door logopedisten ingezet om, in samenwerking met tandartsen en orthodontisten, de afwijkende mondgewoonten, verkeerde manier van slikken en het slissen af te leren. Wanneer de therapie effectief wordt toegepast is er een grote kans dat de scheefstand van de tanden vanzelf verminderd of zelfs helemaal verdwijnt. In dit boek laat ik op een, voor kinderen en ouders, duidelijke en speelse manier zien wat er gebeurt wanneer een kind duimt. Daarna zie je wat er gebeurt wanneer het kind stopt met duimen en wat dit doet met de duim, tong en tanden. Het boek is niet ontwikkeld om het kind te zeggen dat hij moet stoppen met duimen, maar om hem uit te leggen waaróm het beter zou zijn om te stoppen.
