Die Herkunft der organischen Nahrung, die oft eigentiimlichen und auffiilligen Einrichtungen, die ihrem Erwerb dienen, waren schon einigermaBen bekannt, bevor die chemische Natur der Nahrung selbst, die zellphysiologischen und chemischen Mechanismen der Aufnahme und Assimilation untersucht wurden. Wahrend wir die begriffliche Klarung der Okologie der Heterotrophie vor allem DE BARY verdanken, hat PFEFFER entscheidend die Physiologie der Er- nahrung mit organischen Verbindungen eingeleitet. In der Einfiihrung zum Kapitel "Die NahrstoHe der Pflanzen" schreibt PFEFFER (1881, S. 180): "So bedeutungsvoll fUr die Ernahrung der Pflanzen und fUr den Kreislauf des Sto es in der Natur die durch Lichtstrahlen vermittelte Produktion organischer Substanz aus Kohlensaure und Wasser ist, so reprasentiert sie doch in ernahrungsphysiologischer Hinsicht nur einen besonderen Modus der Einfiihrung organischer Nahrung in den vegetabilischen Organismus, und es ist wohl zu beachten, daB die Bedeutung und die Verarbeitung der organischen Nahr- sto e in prinzipieller Hinsicht dieselbe ist, gleichviel ob diese Sto e als organische Korper in die Pflanze gelangten oder in dieser aus organischen Sto en gescha en wurden. In beiden Fallen werden die organischen NahrstoHe fortgeleitet, um erst fern von dem Ort der Aufnahme, resp. Bildung weiteren Metamorphosen zu unter- liegen, und wie die Wurzel ihre organische Nahrung von den griinen Blattern er- halt, so leben auch alle Pflanzen und Thiere auf Kosten der organischen Stoffe, welche in griinen P lanzentheilen aus Kohlensaure und Wasser geschaffen wur- den . . .
