Hilma af Klint is considered one of the great pioneers of abstraction, which has only been appropriately honored in recent years. Less well-known are her artistic beginnings, which were devoted to an intensive study of nature. In the spring and summer months of 1919 and 1920, when she was already creating her today acclaimed abstract paintings, she drew flowers almost every day: "I will try to capture the flowers of the earth," she noted.

The recently discovered folder with 46 watercolours, which is made available here as a facsimile edition, reveals the uniquely individual approach of the Swedish exceptional artist: colourful watercolours convey the pulsating power of nature and contrast the delicate flowers at the same time - contrary to botanical representation conventions - precisely drawn diagrams. Realism and fiction, near vision and vision meet each other. In the interplay of organic forms and abstract structures, the portofolio thus refers to the overarching spiritual, cosmological dimension of Hilma af Klint's creation.

Hilma af Klint (1862, Solna–1944, Danderyd) studied painting at the Royal Academy of Liberal Arts in Stockholm. Her turn to abstraction followed in the course of her profound examination of spirituality and theosophy. She is considered a pioneer of picturesque abstraction.
