About The Book

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina is one of the "Sea Islands", the chain of barrier islands that separates mainland South Carolina, Georgia and northern Florida from the Atlantic Ocean. It is the largest island on the Atlantic coast of the United States south of Long Island. A wide, navigable channel leads northwest from the ocean into the broad expanse of Port Royal Sound. From the Sound, navigable Skull Creek--part of the Intracoastal Waterway--leads southwest across the eastern side of the Island to merge with navigable Broad Creek, join Calibogue Sound and flow again into the ocean.

Today, we know the Island and the Port Royal Sound area as places of natural and manmade beauty, with wide, sandy beaches, gentle surf, twisting waterways and miles of meandering waterfront land, towering oaks and pines and canopied palmetto palms, manicured golf courses, well-maintained marinas, protected and accessible conservation areas, good fishing, extensive tennis facilities, attractive homes and a range of vacation accommodations. The Port Royal area offers a cornucopia of activities, diverse businesses, good public and private schools, a university, extensive medical services, access by road and air, stable government, and well-supported private and public facilities. With those enviable assets, the Island invites us to visit for a few pleasant days or stay for many years.
But you would not have found such idyllic conditions during much of the past 500 years. Those years included the Island's contested exploration, the complex colonial plantation years, the American struggle for independence, a sudden change into a major Civil War battlefield, the difficult years of post-war Reconstruction and the following "Black Codes", the almost forgotten decades of the "Quiet Years", and the Island's startling transformation into a major resort community. At many times during those centuries the Island and the Port Royal Sound area were the scene of historically significant, sometimes violent and frequently sad, man-made and natural events. It was often a far different world from the tranquil and relatively stable world of today.
This book recalls the memorable events that occurred during those 500 years, explains how the major Island communities and facilities that exist today were created, and introduces the reader to the fascinating people who made it happen.
