Traditionell wurde Sexualität als Trieb der Natur aufgefasst, dem aus moralischen Gründen Einhalt geboten werden müsste. Dabei hatte der Wille des Menschen als eine Art Zuchtmeister die Peitsche zu schwingen, um der sexuellen "Unzucht" Herr zu werden. Die "sexuellen Revolutionen" im 20. Jahrhundert haben zwar den Zuchtmeister zurückgepfiffen, aber die Vorstellung vom "natürlichen" Sexualtrieb beibehalten keine und diese eher noch radikalisiert: Befreiend und gesund schien nun die von konventionellen Normen ungehemmt praktizierte Sexualität. Der vorliegende Essay geht jedoch nicht von der (unbestreitbar vorhandenen) Macht des Naturtriebs und seiner unwillkürlichen Physiologie aus, sondern von der Macht des menschlichen Geistes, willkürlich in die physiologischen Vorgänge einzugreifen und diese zu modellieren. Selbstverständlich sind geistigen Kräften (wie auch den körperlichen) Grenzen gesetzt. Aber wo liegen sie konkret? Wie ernsthaft versucht der einzelne Mensch, diese Grenzen auszuweiten oder sie kontrolliert zu überschreiten? Ist der Mensch dem Geschlechtstrieb so weit ausgeliefert, dass er ihn nur um den Preis seiner Vitalität und Gesundheit unterdrücken kann? Ähnelt das Sexualleben nicht jenem Kinderspiel von "Himmel oder Hölle", bei dem es reiner Zufall ist, wo der jeweilige Spieler landet? Der Gedanke, dass Sexualität durch den menschlichen Geist kreativ gestaltet und so zu einer nicht versiegenden Quelle des Glücks werden kann, ist heute ebenso wenig populär, wie das Interesse, ihren mythologischen und religiösen Korrespondenzen nachzuforschen. Die vorliegende Abhandlung berücksichtigt beide Perspektiven.
