This book consists of two parts. In response to the growing European interest in Hindu Music, the author aims to compile and present the writings of Oriental Scholars of Europe on this subject, along with their own commentary on these views and those of ancient Sanskrit musical writers. The collection is divided into two parts: the first part includes extracts from prominent English-language works on Hindu Music, while the second part contains foreign writers' perspectives on Hindu Music. This updated edition incorporates additional foreign viewpoints and omits the author's own views, previously published in "Six Principal Ragas of the Hindus." The author expresses gratitude to those whose works are excerpted in Part II.

About The Compiler: Sourindro Mohun Tagore (1840-1914) was a renowned Bengali musicologist hailing from the influential Tagore family of Bengal, which also produced Rabindranath Tagore. He made significant contributions to both Indian and Western music theory, establishing institutions like the Bengal Music School and Bengal Academy of Music to preserve and promote Indian music. Tagore was a staunch supporter of the British Empire in India, tasked with adapting "God Save the Queen" to Indian melodies. His family held substantial land, including the historic Plassey battlefield and Ganga Sagar pilgrimage site. He received honorary Doctorates of Music from Philadelphia and Oxford and was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1884.
