Auch hat das Land brillante Wissenschaftler, Computerfachleute, Ärzte und Philosophen hervorgebracht. Die Mathematik etwa, die zum Berechnen der Opferplätze benötigt wurde und von der die ganze Welt profitiert, hat von Indien wesentliche Impulse erhalten. Gleichzeitig wirkt das immer noch weit verbreitete Kastensystem, das religiöse Wurzeln hat, als gesellschaftliche und ökonomische Entwicklungsbremse par excellence. Der indische Wirtschaftswissenschaftler Deepak Lal schätzt, dass es in Indien 2000 Jahre lang - von 300 v. Chr. bis 1700 - zu keiner Steigerung des Pro-Kopf-Einkommens gekommen ist. Auch zählt die Unterdrückung und Diskriminierung des weiblichen Geschlechts zu den religiös bedingten Schattenseiten des Subkontinents. Nach dem Aufzeigen der historischen Wurzeln der indischen Religions-philosophien stellt die Autorin zunächst die Grundelemente des Hinduismus dar. Dem hinduistischen System, das sich wie der Buddhismus aus dem Brahmanismus heraus entwickelt hat, wird dann die Kritik Buddhas an diesem gegenübergestellt. Im Hauptteil erörtert die Autorin durch die Brille moderner Erkenntnisse, wo die Stärken und Schwächen des Hinduismus liegen. Denn das heute vor allem hinduistisch geprägte Indien ist ein Land, das zunehmende internationale Aufmerksamkeit erfährt. Astrid Rosenschon ist im Jahr 1951 in Oberfranken in der Richard-Wagner-Stadt Bayreuth geboren. Dort hat sie ihre Schulzeit verbracht. Im Jahr 1970 hat sie sich an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen/Nürnberg zum Studium der Volkswirtschaftslehre eingeschrieben, das sie 1975 mit dem Diplomexamen abgeschlossen hat. Anschließend hat sie am dortigen Lehrstuhl für Finanzwissenschaft bei Professor Horst Claus Recktenwald als Assistentin mitgearbeitet und im Jahr 1979 ihre Doktorarbeit mit "summa cum laude" abgeschlossen. Es folgte eine sechsjährige Anstellung als Akademische Rätin. In ihrer Zeit bei Professor Recktenwald ist sie intensiv mit dem Lebenswerk des schottischen Moralphilosophen und geistigen Vaters der modernen Ökonomie, Adam Smith (1723 - 1790), in Berührung gekommen. Auf ihn geht die Idee einer "Unsichtbaren Hand" zurück, die den Menschen wohlgesonnen ist und die lenkend hinter allen Entwicklungen steht. Seit dem Jahr 1985 arbeitet Astrid Rosenschon an einer international renommierten Forschungsinstitution.
