ber 2000 in zahlreichen Archiven des In- und Auslandes gesammelte Briefe aus dem Zeitraum 1849 bis 1974 werden in Form von Regesten mit kurzen Inhaltsangaben und Originalzitaten tabellarisch dargestellt und 277 besonders bedeutungsvolle Briefe im Volltext wiedergegeben. Eine ausf hrliche Kommentierung f hrt in die Vielfalt von Themen ein. Das thematische Spektrum der sich in den Briefen spiegelnden Hirnforschung reicht von der vergleichenden Anatomie (niedere Tiere Affen Menschen) ber die Grundlagen der Neurologie und Psychiatrie (Lokalisationslehre, Elektrodiagnostik, bildgebende Verfahren) bis zu Fragen nach dem Wesen von Bewusstsein oder Seele, also bis in die Randgebiete der Philosophie, hier speziell bis zu K. Jaspers, N. Hartmann und M. Heidegger. Die Briefe bieten einen Einblick in die Entstehung neuer Konzeptionen, in kritische, gelegentlich auch polemische Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Wissenschaftlern. Hierzu geh ren auf der ideengeschichtlichen Seite beispielsweise die Neuronentheorie, die Elitehirnforschung, die Fragen nach den Ursachen besonderer Verletzlichkeit einzelner Hirngebiete (Hippocampus) oder die Bedeutung des Riechhirns. Nicht nur derart wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Fragestellungen machen die Briefe zu einer historisch interessanten Quelle, sondern auch das Verhalten der Wissenschaftler zueinander und der Einfluss, den das politische Umfeld auf die Forschungst tigkeit und die Themenwahl aus bt. Insofern sind Stichw rter in den Briefen und deren Kommentierung auch Kriegsforschung, Antisemitismus, Eugenik, Euthanasie, Zwangsemigration, F cherkonkurrenz, Kampf um Institutionen, aber auch um Priorit ten. Bemerkenswert ist der enge Kontakt der international ma gebenden Forscher vor allem vor dem ersten Weltkrieg, nicht unproblematisch die Wiederaufnahme von Kontakten nach dem Ende des zweiten Weltkrieges. Die Sammlung bietet insofern auch dem Zeitgeschichtler und Soziologen neue Aspekte.
