Or cette bande de 360 km2 doit �tre replac�e au centre non seulement elle a vu grandir nombre d'acteurs d�terminants, mais elle concentre une densit� in�gal�e de r�fugi�s, � partir de 1948-1949. Cette enclave que l'�gypte refusa alors d'annexer devint un p�le d'affirmation collective, puis la matrice des fedayines.
C'est l� que l'OLP et les factions arm�es se d�velopp�rent, apr�s 1967, sur les ruines du nass�risme. C'est l� que leur d�faite, consomm�e en 1972, creusa la d�pendance du territoire envers Isra�l et favorisa l'essor du mouvement islamiste. C'est l� qu'�clata le grand soul�vement de 1987 en faveur de l'�tat palestinien. Et c'est l� aussi que ce r�ve fut fracass� par la rupture entre le Fatah et le Hamas en 2007.
Ce bout de territoire, qui fut durant des si�cles le carrefour des empires, zone de contact entre le Levant et l'�gypte, ne doit pas aujourd'hui �tre r�duit � une prison � ciel ouvert . Loin d'�tre un non-lieu, fruit des hasards de la guerre, il s'agit bien d'un foyer majeur du nationalisme palestinien.
Ce livre est la premi�re recherche historique consacr�e � Gaza il en retrace la longue histoire, depuis la haute Antiquit� �gyptienne jusqu'� la fin de l'Empire ottoman, avant de s'attacher avec une pr�cision in�dite aux �v�nements du si�cle �coul�.

Filiu, Jean-Pierre: - Historien et arabisant, Jean-Pierre Filiu est professeur à Sciences Po (Paris), après avoir enseigné à Columbia (New York) et Georgetown (Washington). Son Apocalypse dans l'Islam a reçu en 2008 le prix Augustin-Thierry des Rendez-vous de l'Histoire de Blois. Il est l'auteur de Les Neuf Vies d'Al-Qaida (2009) et La Révolution arabe (2011). Ses travaux sur le monde arabo-musulman ont été publiés dans une douzaine de langues.
