La mayor�a de los documentos conservados en la Real Academia de la Historia relacionados con el per�odo de la evangelizaci�n de Jap�n por parte de los misioneros europeos se dedican a los martirios que tuvieron lugar en el Jap�n de la �poca. Gracias a estos registros, el autor ha abordado en profundidad su estudio sobre el martirio y los m�rtires japoneses de los siglos XVI y XVII.La evangelizaci�n en Jap�n se inici� a mediados del siglo XVI bajo el liderazgo de Francisco Javier. La pronta aceptaci�n de la religi�n procedente de la Pen�nsula Ib�rica hizo temer al gobernado Toyotomi Hidyyoshi, que decidi� la expulsi�n de los sacerdotes. Para entonces, el cristianismo hab�a encontrado ancla en tierra nipona: en pocas d�cadas, Jap�n albergaba doscientas iglesias y decenas de miles de cristianos.Esta obra analiza los documentos relativos a los martirios de los fieles japoneses durante los siglos XVI y XVII y permite comprender que el esp�ritu del cristianismo arraig� profundamente sobre el suelo japon�s.Bajo la pol�tica prohibicionista hacia el cristianismo, los cristianos japoneses ten�an dos alternativas. La primera: profesar el budismo tras apostatar. La segunda, morir en el martirio si no abandonaban p�blicamente la fe cristiana.En este sentido, los misioneros europeos inculcaron en los fieles japoneses el esp�ritu del martirio a trav�s de algunos libros sobre la historia de los santos m�rtires que hab�an muerto en Europa en la antig�edad. Numerosos cristianos japoneses eligieron, entonces, el camino del martirio. As�, en lo concerniente al martirio, Jap�n present� ciertas analog�as con la situaci�n de persecuci�n y muerte de los primeros cristianos en el Imperio romano.Los martirios iniciados en 1614 movieron a los cristianos japoneses a mantener sus creencias religiosas en la clandestinidad para, sin renunciar a su fe, no perder la vida. Los cristianos ocultos se hac�an pasar por budistas para evitar ser detenidos por las autoridades, y lograron establecer organizaciones secretas para la celebraci�n de misas y el rezo de las oraciones. De este modo, la fe cristiana permaneci� viva en Jap�n pese a su persecuci�n, hasta 1865, fecha del descubrimiento de los cristianos de Nagasaki en la catedral de Oura.
