He holds a Doctorate in History with a concentration in Historic Preservation from Middle Tennessee State University, Master's and Bachelor's degrees from Cornell University and a certificate in historic preservation from the University of New Orleans. Dedek qualifies as an architectural historian under the National Park Service guidelines. His professional background is centered on historic preservation and residential design, working in the Division of Architecture at the Texas Historical Commission in Austin for several years and for Michael Emrick, AIA, a preservation architect in Nashville, Tennessee.
