However, the withdrawal of Roman forces, invasions by Picts, Scots, and later by Anglo-Saxons disrupted the spread of Latin. Despite adopting Roman script, English settlers from the Continent introduced their language, largely ignoring Celtic influences. This historical context contributed to the distinct evolution of English, marking a significant shift in linguistic development.

John Collinson Nesfield (1836–1919) was an influential educator in British India and a curate at St Michael's Church, Highgate, London. He authored several books, notably on grammar, which had a significant impact. Nesfield's career included teaching at Highgate Grammar School and serving as a postmaster at Merton College, Oxford. In India, he held various roles, including Director of Public Instruction, impacting education policies. His works, such as "English Grammar: Past and Present" and "A Manual of English Grammar and Composition," were widely used both in Britain and its colonies. Nesfield also contributed to the debate on caste in British India, emphasizing societal fluidity over rigid caste constructs.
