Die radikal neuen Textverfahren der literarischen Moderne von Naturalismus und Décadence bis heute operieren mit einem Sprachmaterial, das durch die gigantische Amplifikations- und Desemantisierungsmaschinerie des Historismus, besonders seiner positivistischen Wissenschaftspraxis im 19. Jahrhundert geprägt ist.

Teil I der vorliegenden Studie diskutiert die wissenschaftliche Verwendung des Historismusbegriffs und erschlie t den Zusammenhang von Historismus und literarischen Textverfahren exemplarisch am historischen Roman und an populärwissenschaftlicher Wissenschaftsprosa. Teil II beschreibt auf dieser Basis verschiedene Texturen der literarischen Moderne: Katalogtexturen und kunstgewerbliche Texturen in Naturalismus, Impressionismus und Décadence, abstrakte Prosa und hermetische Lyrik der emphatischen Moderne sowie Spieltexturen. Die historische Situation bezeichnet hier vor allem ein Vertextungsproblem. Zugleich folgt aus der Beobachtung von Lexemautonomie, Destrukturierung und Unverständlichkeit in modernen Texten die Forderung nach einer spezifischen Hermeneutik der literarischen Moderne. Die Entdeckung der Textur definiert das Universum literarischer Semiose insgesamt neu. Teil III diskutiert unter dieser Prämisse Möglichkeiten neuer literarischer Strukturbildung und Modelle zu deren Beschreibung unter den Stichworten Erzählen, Essay, Enzyklopädie und Film.
