About The Author

David Eugene Smith (1860–1944) was a pioneering American mathematician, educator, and historian of mathematics. Renowned for his contributions to mathematics education, he authored influential texts such as *The Teaching of Elementary Mathematics*, *The Teaching of Arithmetic*, and *The Teaching of Geometry*. He collaborated with Wooster Beman on geometry and arithmetic works and co-authored *The Hindu-Arabic Numerals* with Louis Karpinski. Smith’s historical scholarship includes the acclaimed *History of Mathematics* (2 volumes) and *Rara Arithmetica*.
