Hobson's Choice is a three-act comedy play written by Harold Brighouse and first published in 1916. The play is set in Salford, a town in the north of England, in the late 19th century. The story revolves around a bootmaker named Henry Hobson, who is a widower and has three daughters. Hobson is a hard-drinking, domineering man who treats his daughters as servants and refuses to allow them to marry. The eldest daughter, Maggie, is a strong-willed and independent woman who takes matters into her own hands and decides to marry Willie Mossop, one of Hobson's bootmakers. Maggie sees potential in Willie and helps him to set up his own shop, which becomes a great success. Hobson, meanwhile, is left to deal with the consequences of his own stubbornness and the loss of his best worker. The play explores themes of class, gender, and family relationships, as well as the changing social and economic landscape of the time. It is known for its strong female lead character and its humorous and witty dialogue. Hobson's Choice has been adapted into several films, television shows, and stage productions, and is still widely performed today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
