"Puedo declarar que estoy tan alejado de la religión judía como de todas las demás; en otras palabras: las considero sumamente importantes como objeto del interés científico, pero no me atañen sentimentalmente en lo más mínimo. En cambio, siempre tuve un poderoso sentimiento de comunidad con mi pueblo, sentimiento que también he nutrido en mis hijos. Todos seguimos perteneciendo a la confesión judía". Con la habitual objetividad y claridad de Freud, el psicoanalista vienés reconoce su origen. Sin embargo, de sus escuetas delaraciones se desprende que el sentimiento de pertenencia del pueblo judío abarca más allá de las creencias religiosas. También, resalta el valor y la decisión de defender sus raíces, a pesar de las consecuencias dañinas que le ocasionó en su práctica profesional. Es decir, que el valor de ser parte del grupo es mayor - o más apreciado - para una figura de la talla de Freud, que los riesgos que conlleva hacerlo público. En fin, es posible constatar la profundidad y complejidad que el asunto judío reviste. Por tanto, aunque sea de una manera somera, es imperativo hacer una revisión teórica en la sociología moderna para ubicar, comprender y dimensionar el fenómeno, además de examinar algunos hechos históricos. Otro obligado punto de referencia es la evolución actual del tema en estudio. No es posible partir del supuesto que el antisemitismo es un movimiento del pasado. Por el contrario, todavía provoca apasionadas reacciones y el más rígido hermetismo, amén que el sentimiento contra el pueblo hebreo se ha propagado como
