Home of the Brave: Contemporary American Immigrants is a powerful work of documentary photography and oral history by acclaimed photographer and interviewer Mary Motley Kalergis. Through intimate black-and-white portraits and first-person narratives, the book presents the experiences of immigrants from many nations who came to the United States in search of freedom, opportunity, safety, and belonging.

Rather than focusing on politics or statistics, Kalergis turns her attention to the deeply human dimension of immigration: family, memory, sacrifice, identity, work, hope, and cultural transition. Each subject speaks in his or her own voice, creating a vivid mosaic of contemporary American life and the enduring dream of becoming American.

Originally published by E.P. Dutton, the project was also presented as an exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. With empathy, honesty, and visual elegance, Home of the Brave captures the courage and resilience of individuals building new lives while carrying forward the histories and traditions of the worlds they left behind.
