About The Book

Homerides or Letter to Mr. Pope: Occasioned by His Intended Translation of Homer is a satirical poem written by an anonymous author under the pseudonym ""Doggrel"" in 1715. The poem is a response to Alexander Pope's announcement that he would be translating Homer's epic poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey, into English. The poem takes the form of a letter addressed to Pope, in which Doggrel claims to be a friend and admirer of Pope's work. However, the tone quickly turns critical as Doggrel accuses Pope of being arrogant and presumptuous in attempting to translate Homer. Doggrel argues that Homer's poetry is untranslatable and that any attempt to do so would be a futile exercise. Throughout the poem, Doggrel employs a range of satirical techniques, including parody, irony, and sarcasm, to mock Pope's literary ambitions. The poem also includes references to contemporary literary figures and events, adding to its satirical tone.
