Humans vs. Zombies is underway again this fall at Eureka State University. The game Moderators have promised new elements for this year's live-action game of zombie-themed tag, and the five-member squad known as the Family is ready for the challenge. This semester's game has a corporate sponsor, Maxx Corporation, providing a new line of foam dart weaponry set to compete with Hasbro's NERF line, raising excitement to new levels. But when the Maxx Corp dart blasters are distributed, the weapons turn out to be lethal and zombie players are shot dead. The shock is quickly overshadowed by the next revelation. The dead students are getting back up and continuing to play with the single-minded determination of the undead. The Family faces down horror after horror as the week progresses. An oddly matched group, tensions flare and hearts break as the pressure reveals each member's true character. A campus battleground under zombie invasion is the worst place to worry about relationships, but if not now, there may never be another chance. The rules are binding and the game is in motion. All the Family can do is play on.

Jesse Riggs ran a successful game of HvZ for five semesters at his alma mater Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. The game was cancelled the final semester of his senior year because of new campus rules, and the ensuing effort to reclaim the game demonstrated to Jesse a need for higher education admins sensitive to student rights and responsibilities. To that end he obtained his master's degree in higher education administration and is now pursuing a career in student life administration, as well as working to develop campus learning experiences based on gamification. Jesse travels yearly to the Truman State University HvZ Invitational in Kirksville, Missouri, where in 2014 he was the oldest player in attendance. As such, he will no longer be admitting to his actual age It is his considered opinion as a higher education professional that HvZ has the highest potential yield for student development of any large scale activity. Time and again he has witnessed acts of heroism, selflessness, and strength of character among HvZ players, both human and zombie. HvZ is, he believes, a cure for the ailments of a generation wholly focused on itself and overrun by technology. Writing influences include Ted Dekker, Frank Peretti, Douglas Adams, J. R. R. Tolkien, Clive Cussler, C.S. Lewis, and Brian Jacques. Visit www.humansvszombies.org for information on playing and organizing HvZ.
