Squeezed between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg dynasty, ground between powers too vast to defeat and too oppressive to endure, Hungary's nobles, Protestant congregations, disbanded soldiers, and serf communities forged one of the most sustained and consequential rebellions in early modern European history.

From the Wessel�nyi Conspiracy of 1671 through the final defeat at the Treaty of Szatm�r in 1711, the Kuruc rebellions reshaped the constitutional map of Central Europe. Led first by the brilliant, doomed Imre Th�k�ly, who gambled everything on an Ottoman alliance and lost, and then by Francis II R�k�czi, the Jesuit-educated prince whose eight-year war of independence came within reach of forcing genuine Hungarian sovereignty, the movement became a crucible of constitutional argument, military innovation, and social contradiction.

Drawing on decades of scholarship, Hungary's Kuruc Rebellions traces the full arc of the Kuruc era: the personal tragedies and geopolitical miscalculations, the peasant soldiers promised liberation and betrayed by the settlement their blood had purchased, the diplomatic campaigns that France, Russia, and Sweden exploited without honoring, and the profound question that the rebellion posed and could not answer, what liberty actually means when those who fight for it cannot afford to share it equally.

Kempson, Patrick: - "

Patrick Kempson is an Irish historian and writer with a longstanding focus on the contested borderlands of early modern Central Europe. Born in County Tipperary and educated at University College Cork, he has spent years tracing the political and social upheavals that shaped the kingdoms caught between Ottoman and Habsburg power in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. His particular interest lies in the relationship between constitutional resistance and social transformation - in the gap between what rebellions promise and what they deliver.Hungary's Kuruc Rebellions is his most ambitious work to date, the product of sustained engagement with Hungarian, Slovak, and Austrian sources across a decade of research. He is the author of several other works on early modern European history.
