Depuis 60 ans environ, les chrétiens ont réappris à connaitre et à aimer les psaumes. Ils l'ont dû en premier lieu aux "psaumes de Gélineau" et à la Bible de Jérusalem. Ils ont aujourd'hui à leur disposition plusieurs traductions de qualité. Toutes ces traductions ont en commun d'être faites sur l'hébreu. Elles restituent donc parfaitement la prière des "cherchant-Dieu" du Premier Testament. Or la "lecture chrétienne" de ces psaumes hébreux n'a jamais été oubliée (même si elle n'est pas toujours pratiquée). Et cependant, en utilisant les psaumes hébreux de manière exclusive, les chrétiens ont peur-être perdu quelque saveur de leur prière. En effet, s'ils prient Dieu dans les psaumes, ils n'y rencontrent pas, directement, Jésus. Peuvent-ils s'y résoudre ? Il n'en a pas toujours été ainsi. Dans l'Eglise, jusqu'à ces derniers temps (l'immédiat après-guerre), le texte hébreu des psaumes ne fut jamais officiellement utilisé mais bien - pour les Eglises d'Orient, le texte grec de la LXX - et pour celle d'Occident, les traductions latines sur la LXX, en particulier la Vulgate, traduites certes sur le grec mais écrites par des chrétiens et pour l'usage des chrétiens et donc "patinées" par eux d'Evangile. Ces textes permettaient une toute autre lecture que l'hébreu, puisqu'ils célébraient clairement Jésus. Certes, au long des siècles, incompris de presque tous (sauf les lettrés), le latin avait tiré un voile sur la portée christologique des psaumes. Mais dans les premiers siècles où il était langue courante, il permettait à tous de rencontrer ouvertement le christ et ses mystères dans le texte même du psautier. La traduction présentée ici, sans diminuer l'importance des psaumes de l'hébreu, voudrait permettre aux chrétiens de connaître la richesse de leur prière passée, afin de mieux la poursuivre.

Jean VANEL (1927-2019) a été Prêtre du Diocèse de Lyon pendant plus de soixante ans. Il a enseigné plusieurs années l'Ancien Testament dans un établissement diocésain. Il a également publié le livre de Sara, aux Editions CERF, le 1/10/1984.
