Werkzeuge werden meistens unter diesem Gesichtspunkt entwickelt und oft auch entsprechend gestaltet. Selten weiss der Erfinder, was er erfunden hat. Das Telefon war als Rundfunk gedacht. Der Computer - nomen est omen - sollte beim Rechnen helfen. Das Internet wurde als Faxsystem konzipiert, das WWW als Datenbank. Meistens erfüllen die neuen Werkzeuge die alten Zwecke gut, viele Erfindungen könnten sonst gar nicht überleben. Auch die Erfinder von Hypertext hatten ganz praktische Anliegen. Der CIA-Agent Vannevar Bush versuchte damit, seine Mikrofiche wiederzufinden. Ted Nelson - der den Begriff Hypertext prägte - wollte Ordnung in der Archivierung von Literatur schaffen. An das Internet konnten beide nicht denken, weil diese Technologie noch nicht vorhanden war. Vernünftigerweise sollte ich natürlich keine Erfinder von Hypertext erfinden, weil das, was die Erfinder erfunden haben, sehr spezifische Probleme lösen sollte, die mit dem, was Hypertext als neue Technologie darstellt, relativ wenig zu tun hatten (vgl. Todesco 1998:267). Neue Zwecke für die neuen Werkzeuge müssen sich erst entwickeln. Beim Telefon waren es nachgewiesenermassen die Hausfrauen der Manager, die das Chatten entdeckten und zeigten, was das Telefon eigentlich ist - denn Symphoniekonzerte hören wir am Telefon erst seit jüngster Zeit, wenn wir durch eingespielte Konserven zum Warten animiert werden sollen. Und dass ich heute alles mittels eines Computers schreibe, den ich nur ganz selten zum Rechnen benutze, hat sehr viel damit zu tun, dass viele Programmierer merkten, dass man auf den Programmeditoren auch Liebesbriefe schreiben kann.
