Il presente studio ha esaminato i fattori determinanti del lavoro minorile nei comuni di Banikoara e Nikki, due comuni situati nel nord del Benin, nell'Africa occidentale. Lo studio si � basato su un campione casuale stratificato, a due livelli, composto da 636 bambini di et� compresa tra i 5 e i 17 anni, provenienti da 257 famiglie dei due comuni. Al termine dello studio, circa il 56% dei bambini � risultato coinvolto nel lavoro minorile. L'agricoltura e le faccende domestiche sono i principali settori di occupazione dei bambini lavoratori. Il lavoro familiare non retribuito � lo status dominante delle attivit� svolte da questi bambini. I fattori rivelatisi determinanti per il lavoro minorile sono: l'et�, il sesso, il livello di istruzione del bambino e la natura (urbana o rurale) del suo ambiente; l'et� e il livello di istruzione del capofamiglia del bambino; il numero dei componenti della famiglia; la qualit� e la frequenza delle campagne di sensibilizzazione delle famiglie sul lavoro minorile; e, infine, la qualit� della gestione (buona o cattiva) da parte della famiglia dei microcrediti che contrae presso gli istituti di microfinanza.
