Questo libro affronta tutta la problematica riguardante la crisi della biodiversità e i possibili modi per affrontarla, partendo dalle definizioni e non eludendo nessuna possibile domanda che ci si possa porre. L'autore ha affrontato la complessa questione attribuendo ciò che sta accadendo non alla stupidità della maggioranza di noi ma piuttosto alle proprietà emergenti che sembrano agire subdolamente quando si passa dal livello individuale a quello sociale. Scrive tuttavia nella introduzione che, "in alcuni di noi c'è ancora un sussulto del cuore che può anche essere percepito come argomento etico. Un predatore o un competitore può distruggere una vita senza provare un briciolo di rimorso ma un essere capace di percepirne la bellezza e la perfezione non può non provare una profonda frustrazione di fronte alla sua fredda distruzione di massa, ammesso che si renda conto di ciò che sta accadendo. In questo volume tenteremo di definire termini, postulati, paradigmi, proprietà emergenti, principi e criteri fondamentali per poi rivedere l'intera questione della crisi ecologica contemporanea in un'ottica più complessiva e possibilmente più oggettiva di quella ecologista, un'ottica che finirà per spostare l'intero problema dai termini tecnici, scientifici e magari anche culturali nei quali esso è stato tradizionalmente confinato ai termini umanistici, etici e filosofici nei quali più correttamente dovrebbe essere collocato".Renato Massa è stato professore di Biologia animale e di Conservazione della natura presso l'Università degli Studi di Milano Bicocca fino al 30 settembre 2009, data alla quale si è ritirato per dedicarsi unicamente alla saggistica e alla narrativa. È autore di numerosi saggi scientifici e divulgativi sui temi di zoologia, biologia della riproduzione, conservazione della natura, evoluzione biologica, biodiversità e inoltre di alcuni libri di narrativa sul tema del rapporto tra uomini e animali. Questo libro è il secondo volume di una serie nella quale l'autore si propone di raccontare le sue esperienze a contatto con gli animali e con la natura nel corso di una intera vita.
