El período de la historia de México conocido como la Intervención Francesa y Segundo Imperio Mexicano, es una etapa apasionada y apasionante. La suspensión de los pagos de la deuda externa del país en 1861, por el Gobierno del Presidente Benito Juárez, va a servir de pretexto para que Francia envíe a México un ejército de ocupación, hecho que gestaría la creación de una monarquía propuesta por grupos enemigos de la causa republicana. Termina este período con el fusilamiento, en el Cerro de las Campanas de la ciudad de Querétaro, de Fernando Maximiliano de Habsburgo, Miguel Miramón y Tomás Mejía, dando fin así, a la tentación monárquica y a los anhelos europeos intervencionistas y como consecuencia de este proceso, el sobresaliente hecho de consolidación de la República, dando cauce a un destino propio e íntegro ejercicio de la soberanía nacional. Por estas razones es particularmente valiosa esta colección de fotografías, todas ellas relacionadas directa o indirectamente con el período brevemente descrito, ya que es indudable que la historia se ha enriquecido con la fotografía y esta con el adelanto de la tecnología en siglo XIX, se convirtió en parte y testimonio. Los afortunados trabajos de Nicéphore Niepce, de Louis-Jacques Mandé Daguerre, Talbot, Richard Leach Maddox y la Compañía Eastman, entre otros, hicieron nacer la fotografía, respondiendo al más profundo y callado deseo del hombre: la inmortalidad. Inmortalidad que es el más claro rasgo de esta notable colección.
