Impressions of Theophrastus Such is a collection of essays by the renowned Victorian author George Eliot. The book is a departure from Eliot's usual style, as it is written in the form of a series of character sketches and essays, rather than a traditional novel. The titular character, Theophrastus Such, is a fictional persona created by Eliot to voice her own opinions and observations on various topics, including literature, society, and human nature. The book is divided into two parts, with the first section containing character sketches of various individuals, including a misanthropic clergyman, a self-absorbed poet, and a vain socialite. The second section consists of more traditional essays, covering topics such as the role of women in society, the nature of genius, and the importance of education. Impressions of Theophrastus Such was published in 1879, towards the end of Eliot's career. It was not as well-received as some of her other works, and is considered one of her lesser-known books. However, it remains an interesting and insightful read, offering a glimpse into the mind of one of the most celebrated writers of the Victorian era.1879. Eliot is the pen name for Mary Ann, later Marian Evans, English novelist. This is Eliot's last published work and it takes the form of a set of essays, or impressions, by a fictional narrator whose name, contrary to the title's suggestion, is not Theophrastus Such: Theophrastus was a student of Aristotle. It reveals her wisdom on matters ranging from plagiarism and self-deception to moral blindness, national consciousness and antipathies. Character studies and philosophical reflections offer the reader a veiled glimpse of Eliot's perception of her own character, as well as those of her friends.
