Er offenbart sich in vielen seiner Werke in expliziter Form. Thomas Manns Liebe zur Musik, insbesondere der Wagners, sowie dessen regelrechte Bewunderung des Verfalls- oder Todesmotivs findet einen Eingang in einer Vielzahl seiner literarischen Werke. Im Gegensatz zu seinen anderen Werken teilt sich das Faktum der Musik in seinem erfolgreichsten Roman, den Buddenbrooks. Verfall einer Familie(1895-1901) zum ersten Mal in der ungestrafften Gro form eines Generationsromans mit. Dabei kommt der Musik die für den formalen Abschluss und die thematische Vollendung der Geschichte, dem Verfall der Familie Buddenbrook, entscheidende Bedeutung zu. Die Leidenschaft zur Musik erweckt der Autor allerdings erst im vierten und zugleich letzten Geschlecht der kaufmännischen Senatorenfamilie. Insbesondere in der Figur des "charismatisch- fragilen Hanno" Buddenbrook verbindet sich Manns Verehrung der Wagnerianischen Musik mit der Todessymbolik. Hanno ist der einzige Sohn von Thomas und Gerda Buddenbrook, mit dessen Tod die Geschichte der Buddenbrooks ihr Ende findet. Er verkörpert die Auseinandersetzung des künstlerisch begabten Menschen mit den Anforderungen des Lebens. "In ihm ist noch einmal die Möglichkeit eines gro en Künstlerthums gegeben[...], die nicht in Erfüllung geht." Es erscheint, als erschaffe sich Hanno durch die musikalische Improvisation eine Art Fluchtweg aus der Realität in eine eigene, neue Wirklichkeit. Das improvisierende Musizieren mutet als eine Art Schlüsselerlebnis für den sensiblen Jungen an, das seinen Tod und somit den Verfall der Buddenbrooks besiegelt.
