In a Cage and Beyond, an anthology of poems, explores themes such as scientific thinking, dominance and resistance, and the search for deeper meaning. The poems in this collection reflect feelings of disillusionment, as well as a longing for truth, freedom and peace. From the perspectives of both human existence and the cosmos, the poems capture the alienation, fragmentation and post-colonial values of equality, unity and justice, that define the postmodern world. Though the poet feels trapped in a cage, he dreams of breaking free, yearning to soar like a bird in the sky of freedom and liberation. Dr Bhelkar highlights the conflict between man and machine, depicting how humanity has become enslaved by technology, symbolised by the cage, leading to a loss of identity.
Dr Ratnakar D. Bhelkar is a poet, short story writer, critic, editor and translator, fluent in both English and Marathi. Born in Kalmeshwar, Nagpur, India, he holds a PhD in Science Fiction and a DLitt in Translation Studies.
