THE BOOK'In our Day...'
Life in the glens and villages of Perthshire is viewed through the eyes of shepherds, farmers, crofters, estate workers, housewives, gardeners, professionals, trades-people and children.
They all share reminiscences, stories, games, sayings and rhymes in Scots and Gaelic, which have been recorded for this book. Excerpts of transcriptions have been woven together by folklorist Margaret Bennett who also draws strands from writt en records.
Perthshire singer and tradition-bearer Doris Rougvie has also illustrated the book, which concludes with a selection of Perthshire songs. Along with several friends, Doris and Margaret have recorded all the songs, available on a CD from Grace NotePublications or on downloads atwww.gracenotepublications.co.uk

MARGARET BENNETT is a prize-winning author as well known as a singer and broadcaster, she is widely regarded as "Scotland's foremost folklorist."
Bennett has written extensively about Scottish folklore and culture at home and abroad.
Her prize-winning books include The Last Stronghold: Scottish Gaelic traditions in Newfoundland (1989), Oatmeal and the Catechism: Scottish Gaelic Settlers in Quebec (1999), and Scottish Customs from the Cradle to the Grave, (2004).
She is also the author-producer of several sound recordings and DVDs, including 2 CDs about the Newfoundland-Gaels, Dileab Ailean(2009).
Her collaborations with her late son, Martyn Bennett include CDs (GlenLyon, re-released, 2011), which featured in the highly acclaimed theatre production 'The Black Watch'.
She is the recipient of several honours including The Celtic Women International award for "lifelong service to Scottish and Celtic Culture" ( 2003), an Honorary Doctor of Music (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, 2010), Association of Scottish Literary Studies Honorary Life 'fellow' in recognition of contribution to Scottish literature (2010), in recognition or her contribution to Quebec cultural studies, the prestigious 'Prix du Québec' (2011) and Honorary Professor of the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh (2012).
As the late Hamish Henderson said, "Margaret embodies the spirit of Scotland."

DORIS ROUGVIE Collaborator Doris Rougvie, whose drawings illustrate the book, is a singer, artist and long-time friend of Margaret. Originally from Perthshire, she has a life-long interest in local history and folk song.
