About The Book

In The City By The Lake is a two-part novel written by Blanche Fearing in 1892. The book is set in Chicago during the late 1800s and tells the story of two women from vastly different backgrounds. The first book, titled The Shadow, follows the life of a wealthy socialite named Alice Van Kirk. Alice is a beautiful and intelligent woman who has everything she could ever want, except for true love. She becomes fascinated with a mysterious man known only as ""The Shadow"" and begins a dangerous affair with him. As Alice's obsession with The Shadow grows, she finds herself drawn into a world of deception and betrayal.The second book, titled The Slave Girl, tells the story of a young African American woman named Lizzie. Lizzie is a former slave who has recently moved to Chicago in search of a better life. She quickly realizes that life in the city is not as easy as she thought it would be and finds herself working as a maid for a wealthy family. Lizzie is determined to make a better life for herself and her family, but she soon discovers that the color of her skin is a barrier to success.
