India and the Hindoos is a comprehensive work that offers a popular overview of India, focusing on its geography, history, government, culture, manners, customs, literature, and religion. The book provides insight into the ancient civilization of India, exploring the rich traditions, societal structures, and religious practices of the Hindu people. It delves into India's vast and diverse landscape, its historical milestones, and the role of Hinduism in shaping its society. Aimed at a general audience, the work seeks to present a broad understanding of India and its people during the period of British colonial rule.

Ferdinand De Wilton Ward, Jr. (1851–1925) known as "The Young Napoleon of Finance," was an American swindler whose Ponzi scheme caused the financial ruin of many, including Ulysses S. Grant and Thomas Nast. In 1880, Ward founded Grant & Ward, using false claims about government contracts to attract investors. The scheme collapsed in 1884, triggering the Panic of 1884. Ward was convicted of fraud and sentenced to prison, serving six years. After his release, he failed to regain his wealth. Ward died in 1925, leaving a legacy of financial destruction, with his great-grandson later writing about his life.
