The author has made a noble attempt to depict the history of India by portraying its past and present through these two volumes of the book. This 2 volumes work gives a popular history of the various people of India, geographical information, and a narrative of the history of various cities of India. The book is well-illustrated showing panoramas, natives, and monuments. This account of India in the early 20th century provides us with an overview of the country's colorful history and culture, and then examines the various regions in more detail. Photographs of the exotic locales add interest. The work ends with a glossary of commonly-used Indian words, some of which--bungalow, khaki, and bazaar, for example-have entered the English language. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible. With one folding map tipped in at back of volume II, one full-page map, and illustrated with 50 photographic plates. It was first published in 1903.

Author Forbes-Lindsay wrote a number of works on far-flung places during the first two decades of the 20th century, including the Phillipines, Panama, and Cuba, but as a son of the Raj, born in Calcutta to British parents, India always held a special place in his heart. The author has 35 books to his credit.
