Mark Bensley Thornhill (1822-1900) was a British district magistrate and collector in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. In early 1857, he was the first to report an unusual movement of chapatis. Thornhill authored "Indian Fairy Tales" (1879) and memoirs titled "The Personal Adventures and Experiences of a Magistrate during the Rise, Progress, and Suppression of the Indian Mutiny" (1884). Educated at East India College, he served in various administrative roles in India from 1840 until the rebellion. He died on March 14, 1900, on the Isle of Wight. Edith Scannell (1852-1940) was a British illustrator renowned for her work in children's literature, including the illustrations for Mark Thornhill's "Indian Fairy Tales."
