Arthur Anthony Macdonell (1854–1930) was a renowned Sanskrit scholar and philologist. Born in Muzaffarpur, British India, he studied at Göttingen and Oxford, earning a PhD from Leipzig in 1883. He became Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford in 1899. Macdonell edited and translated numerous Sanskrit texts, contributing significantly to Vedic studies. His major works include A Sanskrit-English Dictionary (1893), Vedic Mythology (1897), A History of Sanskrit Literature (1900), and Vedic Grammar (1910). His scholarship provided key insights into Vedic language, literature, and religion, making him a leading authority in the field of Sanskrit studies.
