Um diese Frage untersuchen zu können, soll zunächst geklärt werden, was einem sozialkostruktivistischen Verständnis nach unter ethnischen beziehungsweise indigenen Identitäten zu verstehen ist. Anschlie end werden in einem kurzen Überblick verschiedene theoretische Ansätze vorgestellt, die sich dem Zusammenhang zwischen ethnischer Identität und politischer Mobilisierung widmen. Das theoretische Argument von Mähler/Pierskalla (2015) soll dabei in die Forschungslandschaft eingeordnet und ausführlich dargestellt werden. Die Autor*innen sehen im Vorhandensein natürlicher Ressourcen einen wichtigen Faktor, der eine Politisierung indigener Identitäten und eine Mobilisierung entlang derselben erleichtert. Da sie ein quantitatives Forschungsdesign gewählt haben, kann ihre Arbeit jedoch nicht beleuchten, welche Dynamiken im Detail bei einer Mobilisierung entlang indigener Identitäten entstehen. Zwar finden Mähler und Pierskalla einen statistischen Zusammenhang, der nahe legt, dass das Vorhandensein natürlicher Ressourcen eine wichtige Rolle für das Mobilisierungspotential in diesem Zusammenhang spielt. Wie genau dieser Einfluss sich in der Empirie vollzieht, bleibt jedoch weitestgehend unklar. Diese unter 2. näher aufgeführten Unklarheiten, sollen im Rahmen dieser Arbeit durch eine, auf den Ergebnissen der Studie aufbauende, qualitative Untersuchung adressiert werden. Dafür wird aus dem theoretischen Argument der Autor*innen eine Hypothese zum Zusammenhang von natürlichen Ressourcen und einer Mobilisierung entlang indigener Identitäts-Frames abgeleitet.
