A partire dall'autunno del 1942, l'aumento dei bombardamenti sulle città costrinse milioni di italiani a riparare verso luoghi ritenuti più sicuri nelle campagne o nei centri minori decentrati.Questo libro vuol essere una testimonianza dei ricordi dei bambini "sfollati" nelle campagne durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Guerra che, per i suoi orribili eventi, segnò in modo drammatico le generazioni che la vissero direttamente. Fortunatamente, le notizie di quei drammatici avvenimenti arrivarono ai bambini "sfollati," come una lontana eco, come una narrazione di fatti di cui essi non avvertirono a pieno né l'immanente e pericolosa drammaticità, né le critiche conseguenze per il loro futuro.La loro vita, immersa in una realtà agreste che a causa della guerra si era molto impoverita, era tornata a condizioni sociali ed economiche molto simili a quelle esistenti nelle campagne almeno venti anni prima. Perciò, i loro ricordi acquistano un peculiare valore di testimonianza; quasi come se si riferissero a un periodo storico lontano da noi di circa cento anni. La generazione dei bambini "sfollati," influenzata da quel particolare ambiente rurale e dal tipo di relazioni che vi si stabilivano, acquisì perciò un "imprinting" speciale. In quei bambini le esperienze più dure della guerra furono bilanciate da quella straordinaria carica di armonia e di equilibrio che solo il contatto con la natura può fornire. Il patrimonio storico relativo alla Seconda Guerra è ricchissimo di testimonianze di combattimenti, di atti eroici e di tragedie umanitarie terribili, il mio racconto, invece, si riferisce a un particolare vissuto quotidiano. Episodi quotidiani che tuttavia dimostrano come i bambini sappiano trovare risorse per sopravvivere, crescere e formarsi anche nelle situazioni più drammatiche. Proprio come, ancora oggi, succede in molte zone del mondo devastate dalle guerre.
