This book covers current aspects of important infectious diseases affecting human and animal health in Latin American countries. Readers are equipped with details on arthropod vectors as well as on neglected health problems. Diseases covered include Neglected Tropical Diseases such as Chagas Disease, schistosomiasis, tungiasis, myiasis and leishmaniasis, but also Zika and Chikungunya viral infections, plague and yellow fever. One focus is given on parasitic transmission routes.

In addition, the authors describe current therapeutic options and sustainable control measures, considering both human and animal health. By highlighting options within the interdisciplinary One Health approach, they round off this work into a cutting-edge reference for diverse expert readers. Scientists and clinicians concerned on public health, entomology, tropical medicine and parasitology not only in Latin America will find this collection particularly valuable.

Finally, these contributions are essential in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals and the targets of SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) in order to combat and end epidemics of Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Prof. Heinz Mehlhorn studied at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University of Bonn (Germany). He was chairman of the parasitological institutes in Düsseldorf and Bochum. As a former president of the World Society of Protozoology and long-standing member of the steering committee of the World Society of Parasitologists he runs ongoing lectures in parasitology in several countries, and teaches courses for medical students in Düsseldorf. He has published 42 books on parasitological problems in German, French, English and Spanish. He holds the patents on 12 antiparasitic drugs, which are the basis of products sold by the university spin-off company Alpha-Biocare GmbH (Neuss, Germany), which produces medications, repellents and wound care products for humans and animals.

Prof. Jorg Heukelbach, MD MScIH Ph.D., is an internationally renowned specialist in the area of epidemiology and control of NeglectedTropical Diseases and One Health, with extensive experience in many countries worldwide. He studied at the University of Aachen and Charité Medical Faculty (Germany). He is a Professor at the Federal University of Ceará (Brazil) and Editor-in-Chief of the journal One Health and Implementation Research. He has published and edited several books and performs studies on the epidemiology and control of Neglected Tropical Diseases.
