1m Verlauf seiner Entwicklung hat sich der Mensch in der naturlichen Umwelt seinen Lebensraum erobert, die Umwelt nach seinen Bedurfnissen umgestaltet und sich seine kunstliche Wohn-und Arbeitswelt aufgebaut. Nicht erst heute wird dem Menschen dabei bewuBt, daB die Umwelt durch sein standiges Eingreifen und Ausbeuten irreversiblen Schaden nimmt, und zwar in solchem MaBe, daB Umwelt und gewonnener Lebensraum davon ernstlich bedroht sind. Die Umweltproblematik und die Notwendigkeit, Umweltschutz zu betreiben, sind Fakten, mit denen heute jeder Burger konfrontiert ist und uber die er laufend (allerdings mit ver- schiedenen Vorzeichen und unter unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln) durch Fernsehen, Funk und Presse informiert wird. Umweltschutz setzt aber exakte Kenntnis voraus uber die Umwelt selbst, uber die Belastungsfaktoren, die Belastbarkeit und die wechselseitigen Wirkungsmechanismen. Diese Kenntnis existiert heute jedoch nicht ausreichend, und jeder Fortschritt auf diesem Gebiet deckt nur neue Kenntnislucken auf. Wissenschaft, Politik und Wirtschaft kommen zu gegensatzlichen Einschatzungen und Lbsungsvorschlagen. Eine ein- heitliche Gesamtsicht der Probleme ist nicht einmal in ihren Grundzugen vorhanden. Von wissenschaftlicher Seite besteht (speziell bei jungen Wissenschaftlern) groBe Bereit- schaft, sich der anstehenden Probleme anzunehmen. Dabei besteht Obereinstimmung daruber, daB aile Sparten der Wissenschaft beitragen kbnnen und mussen. Insbesondere ist auch die Informatik herausgefordert, denn die Information uber die Umwelt und uber ihre Veranderung durch den Menschen und durch die Technik ist die Basis aller Umweltschutz- bezogenen Aktivitaten und MaBnahmen. Dabei ist die Vielfalt und Menge der anfallenden Information kaum zu uberschauen.
